Looking after your new lawn

Freshly laid turf is a beautiful addition, but it needs the right care to thrive. Proper maintenance in the first few weeks is essential for strong roots, lush growth, and a healthy lawn that lasts. In this guide, you’ll find simple, practical tips to help your turf settle in and stay green all year round.

Caring for your lawn

Depending on the time of year, for the first 2-3 weeks you should water your new turf daily, ideally early morning or late evening to avoid evaporation. You want the soil to stay moist, not waterlogged.

Once established, you can reduce this to 2-3 times per week, depending on the weather.

Wait until the grass reaches about 7-8 centimetres before giving it the first cut. Keep the mower blades high for the first few cuts and only remove the top third of the grass. Make sure your mower blades are sharp to avoid tearing the grass.

Avoid heavy use of your lawn for the first four to six weeks. This gives the roots time to anchor properly. If you have pets or children, try to keep them off the turf until it is well established.

Apply a starter fertiliser when laying the turf if this hasn’t already been done. After 6-8 weeks, use a balanced lawn fertiliser to encourage strong growth and a healthy green colour.

New turf is vulnerable to weeds, so hand-pull any that appear early on. Avoid using chemical weed killers until the turf is fully established, which usually takes around 3 months.

Ensure the soil underneath your turf is well-prepared and not compacted. If you notice puddles forming after watering, aerate the soil to improve drainage and prevent root rot.

In hot weather, increase watering frequency to prevent the turf from drying out. During cooler months, reduce watering but keep an eye on moisture levels to maintain healthy growth.
